Boiler Upgrade Scheme

What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is the UK's latest grant scheme for low carbon heating. Following on from the successful RHI scheme, the boiler upgrade scheme is an upfront voucher to contribute to the cost of installing a low carbon heat pump heating system. The value of the voucher will depend on the type of heat pump being installed, either a £5000 voucher for an air source heat pump or a £6000 voucher for a ground source heat pump.

How the process works?

The grant application is installer lead, making it straight forward for the homeowner. Firstly, the homeowner should engage with a BUS approved, MCS registered, installer and obtain a quote. Once they are happy with the quote, they should confirmed that with the installer and ask them to begin the process. The MCS installer will then submit the application to the Ofgem, who will contact the customer to gain consent for the application to begin. Once the application has been approved, the installer will be ready to install the system. When the system has been installed, the installer will upload their commissioning documents to the BUS portal and wait for their voucher to be redeemed.

The BUS voucher should be taken off of the homeowner's bill, so they will not be waiting for a refund.

Am I eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

A property is eligible where...

  • it is a dwelling or a non-domestic property,

  • it is not social housing,

  • if it was, or will be, first occupied or used (whether as a dwelling or as a non-domestic property) before the date on which a heat pump or biomass boiler (subject to conditions) is commissioned.

Prior to the installation and commission of the new system, the property must have a fossil fuel or electrically heated system (excluding heat pumps) providing space heating or water heating.

How do I get started?

Press the "get a quote" button and complete the short form. Our team will arrange video/phone call with you to discuss your property, your eligibility and answer any questions you may have. After this, we will visit your property to conduct a full heat loss survey. This survey will tell us the following information:

  • Room-by-room heat loss

  • Room-by-room heat demand

  • Heat pump size needed

  • Radiator sizes needed

  • Insulation needed (if any)

  • Property's suitability for a heat pump

After this, you will receive a full quote from our MCS accredited installer. You can then decide whether you would like to proceed with the grant application or not.

Do I have to pay for the survey?

In most cases our heat loss survey will be a completely free no obligations survey. However, if the property is particularly large, or complex, then a payment may be requested due to the time it takes our team to complete the survey and finalise the data in the office. However, the customer will be notified of any potential payments before the survey has been booked in, so this can be cancelled if the customer is not happy to pay.
